Sometimes it is hard to understand the specific outcomes of the coaching process, since it is a bit different for each person. So here are some real stories of clients that I have worked with, told in their words, who describe what the work has meant to them.
Case Study #1: Ready for the next step Jim had been working for a large corporation for a number of years and from outward appearances was on a very successful career path. He had been promoted a number of times, had the respect of his peers, support of management and the opportunity to climb the corporate ladder. But inside, he felt that the corporate culture of his company was crushing his spirit and staying there was slowly extinguishing his happiness and passion. "I had come to a point in my career where I had strong urges to further define the purpose my career should serve in my life. I was asking myself the basic questions of when do I truly know I am happy, what makes me excited, how best do I leverage my experiences, what environment would I thrive best in, how do I make a difference effectively. I thought I had fully answered these questions for myself (I am confident & self directed), but then sort of realized that I was in a place in my career that I needed to revisit these issues." We began a series of conversations that opened him up to the possibility of making a move to another company, and eventually returning to his homeland in Africa. He is an extremely intelligent and analytical person, and we spent time assessing his skills, reflecting about his interests and evaluating job options. He began to actively search in the job market, and very soon had three viable job offers that lined up with his longer term plans. After a lot of thought and reflection, he made the decision to take a job at another company, in another state. "I had this sudden insight that I was asking the right questions, I was on to something that had answers. You directed me to several resources that lead me to further define my quest. We subsequently had several conversations about my quest and where it was heading." Jim ended up taking a new job in another city and says this about the results of his experience: "First of all I have this wonderful gift of knowing my career purpose and directionally where I want to take it. Second and equally important I have made a major career move which promises to be a very good move. Last but equally important I have seen a 40% uplift in my total compensation."
